Homeless Concern Group Meeting on April 9, 2014

Yreka, CA— Article

I had the pleasure of attending my third meeting coming together every Tuesday to discuss and in the near future implement a homeless shelter for Yreka, CA.

The group has come up with a name for themselves now. They are the

“Beacon of Hope—Gospel Rescue Mission.”

In the process the main group came up with their statement of faith, that they had been working on since the first meeting of this new group in Yreka, CA.

The main group mentioned that they are working on getting grants that will help them with this endeavor they are perusing with having a Homeless shelter in Yreka.

In was mentioned that they are working on trying to raise, $60.000 in cash to help with the purchase/leasing of a building for a homeless shelter.

The group discussed several different possible locations. Where the pastor of the Southern Baptist Church presented a list of properties that he has seen first hand in looking or locating a Homeless Shelter. Another member suggested that the leadership group check out the properties that were being discussed in the meeting.

To date the group has received 25 surveys that were returned so far. Their goal is to have a warming shelter first as they plan for a long-term shelter in Yreka. The surveys are being handed out at the local churches. Like the at the Southern Baptist Church where they offer a pot luck dinner on the first and third Wednesday at 3:30 PM

At the meeting a new copy of a pamphlet titled “Resources For Those in Need” was passed out to the members to review and make comments on.

The other topics mentioned and discussed were about the Ashland volunteer training program. As well as handouts that were presented on the "Framework for Understanding Poverty".

The following areas were listed on another hand out by the group:

1. Homeless Person and Families

2. Emergency Shelters

3. Transitional Shelters

4. Temporary Shelters

5. Homeless Population

Where according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 18.4 percent of Siskiyou County residents were living below the poverty level from 2007-2011.

The group is working on several Memorandums of Understanding (MOS) that they are using as a 501C3 group already established that may be able to help them get started and the name of that group is the "SECURITY OF THE LORD FOUNDATION" The group is also looking into several other homeless shelters for guidance in organizing the Yreka Group. Those include the Mission in Redding, CA that where several articles have been written by the Record Search Light An editorial from the Record Search Light titled Editorial: Library appeal diverts energy from solutions.

A good resource to find out if the Good News Rescue Mission is the correct example to follow for the “Beacon of Hope—Gospel Rescue Mission” Yreka group. By reading some of the comments on the above editorial by the Record Search Light might give a better insight as to the best course to follow when looking for an organization to follow as an example of a group to follow. . The comments on those articles have been pro and con over the years about the Good News Rescue Mission since it has been in operation in Redding,CA.

Then there is the http://www.jesuscenter.org/ in Chico, CA that have been praised over the years as a great group to follow, as a great example of a faith based organization providing resources and help for the homeless in Chico, CA and beyond.

The main group went on and discussed all the people they plan on serving and the policies for the shelter operations the group plans on having for the community of Yreka and beyond.

If people are interested in finding out more about this group and would like to join they can go to Yreka Homeless Group on Face Book. Or stop by 201 S Broadway or call the the Yreka Community Resource Center (Resources for all) @ (530) 842-1313 or visit the Yreka Community Resource Center.
