Tulelake, CA— Violent Protests are not the answer
For days I have wanted to write something about the subject of Protests. I have held it all inside until now. Bringing harm or the destruction of other people’s property is not the way to get your message out. Even though like many others I completely understand the frustration behind the injustice of events like what has happened in the Mike Brown case and others like him.
What needs to be taken into account are those who had nothing to do with either side of the issue and through no fault of their own are brought into the protests by the destruction of their property to try and get a point across by the protesters. Destruction of any kind is neither the answer nor the solution to the problem before us all.
As I watched the burning of cars and trucks and ram sacking of businesses or the blocking of streets to keep people from getting through to their jobs, to their children they may be picking up for what ever reason or their elderly parents who depend on them to be there in their time of need. The innocent ones caught in the middle of the protests that had nothing to do with the situation before us all.
It is one thing to protest to get the word out about what you think is wrong with society, from racial tensions to police brutality. When violence is added to the mix you lose all creditability for your cause. If anything you have now given people a negative view of what you were hoping was a positive one.
Was that your intention, “no”? The destruction of other peoples property and the vandalism to get your point across about the injustice before us all does not come with the destruction or the interruption of other people’s lives in the process to get your point across. That is not the answer and it never will be.
People are not going to support the violent means for change to happen. Change comes from education and standing up to change the laws so it does not happened again. But being violent makes you no better than the people you are protesting against for their wrongs.
Two wrongs do not make it right.
