Sense of belonging with Klamath IDEA

Sense of belonging

KLAMATH FALLS, OR— Networking

There was a gathering of the minds at MC's On Main 617 Main Street, downtown Klamath Falls. First up to speak was David and Nell Scott from Rodeos Pizza & Saladeria.

David is the founder, manager, and co-owner of Rodeos Pizza & Saladeria with his wife Nell. David created and manages every aspect of Rodeos from the logo, menu and kitchen design to the hiring, promotion and bookkeeping. Nell works in the Klamath Falls office of Trout Unlimited and has been leading restoration projects in the Upper Klamath Basin since 2013.

David shared with everyone where he has worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service, a horse-packing guide in the Sierra Nevada and a ranch hand in central California. He studied forest ecology and ecological modeling during graduate school at Colorado State University, alpine plant responses to climate change in the U.S. and South America, and geography and wildlife management while at Humboldt State University.

Previously, Nell worked in watershed management and restoration in Oregon for the City of Portland, the Bureau of Land Management, and Three Rivers Land Conservancy. Her graduate research was in Colorado and focused on assessing the effects of whitewater kayak parks on fish habitat.

The insight that they both shared was where sometimes things don't always go as planned. But if a person sets their mind to it, they can be a success at what ever they do, if you have the right mind set to get it done.

Up next was Steve Morris from Inspiring Healthcare Resources

Steve Morris is the Founder and CEO of Inspiring Healthcare Resources.

Steve grew up in the San Bernardino mountains of Southern California. After graduating from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO, he completed doctoral studies in Biomedical Science at the University of Missouri. He was led to hospice early in his career through the mentorship of his very first CEO, who was passionate about providing outstanding hospice care and inspired Steve with the same passion.

Steve oversees Inspiring Healthcare Resources’ operations across the country, beginning his days early on the West Coast. His role as CEO is to support Inspiring Healthcare Resources' people in reaching their full potential - lifting up those who want to be lifted. “I learned early on that running an organization was only ever about the people you work with and those you serve. Put those things first and the rest will follow.” His coworkers describe him as generous, compassionate and unfailingly positive, attributes which are borne out in his personal motto – “Hakuna Matata”.

He is happiest flying his airplane, but his favorite destination is home with his family, human and four-legged. His pet peeves are public restrooms, germs, and snobbery. He keeps bees, makes a mean pot of chicken and dumplings, and shares his wine collection with a wide circle of friends.

Steve shared with everyone how he started out and how he treats all those around him with love. The love and passion for the work he is doing. But Steve does not refer to it as work but sharing love for his passion of what he called the "H" word, Hospice. And Chapter 9 that he teaches all his employees and referred to it as one of his training tools and when people leave his employ they most certainly take with them Chapter 9. But to go in to the detail of Chapter 9 you will have to talk to Steve and have him explain it to you.

The evening was full of people from all walks of life who came to hear David, Nell and Steve share their experiences, and as Steve put it, his life that he lives everyday. I recorded a video of David and Nell but after the break between David and Nell I was informed I could not use it at the moment to share with all of you. So I did not even try and do one of Steve while he was speaking. But I have the one of David and Nell for future use if need be or if I can share it with all of you in the future.

Networking and refreshments began at 5:30pm, the presentations begat at 6:00 pm. Cost of Admission Supports Food, Drink, and Klamath IDEA $15 Per Person with Online Registration $20 Per Person At the Door (Cash Only) The tickets were sold last month but due to weather reasons last month the evening was rescheduled from Feb to Mar.

Klamath IDEA is committed to creating a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem to increase opportunities for wealth and prosperity for communities in South Central Oregon (Klamath and Lake Counties).

Klamath IDEA is a community initiative made up of organizations, events, and individuals cooperating for a common purpose: entrepreneur-based economic development.

Klamath IDEA is poised to strengthen existing businesses and support the emergence of new ones by combining local intellectual horsepower and economic development resources to support growth-minded entrepreneurs in moving from concept to launch to sustained success.

And for me the project I am involved in Klamath County Record Weekly Street Paper. Which is my passion, "For those who think all homeless are the same".

People need to educate themselves when it comes to homeless. They are not all the same and they are not all old and drug addicts and alcoholics or mentally ill. They each have their reasons as to why they are homeless and how they ended up being homeless. Yes, there are the career homeless and they choose to live that life style. But there are many others struggling each day to survive to the next, to get back on their feet, and be like the rest of us, with a roof over their heads again, to call home.

I had other plans that I have put on hold for the time being, to concentrate on assisting as many homeless on the streets, that I can. I can't do it alone. I need your support and help too. Along with the homeless doing their part by selling the Klamath County Record Weekly Street Paper on the streets. And the support from the community by purchasing a copy each time they come out and are sold in

As much as I love to write, it is time for me to let others do it now. From hopefully having an Editor to take that responsibility. Where groups of homeless can be taught to write their articles and stories for the local street paper. Where the community will be supportive, and do their part by buying the street paper, with stories that they will be interested in reading too.

Giving the homeless hope and their dignity by doing something that will help them get back on their feet, and a home of their own once again. Like the rest of us take for granted everyday. And most people do not realize they are only a pay check or two themselves away from being in the same place as the homeless are in now.

Be sure and check out the video Sense of belonging about Klamath County Record Weekly Street Paper.

It was a great evening with a Sense of belonging with Klamath IDEA with David, Nell, of Rodeos Pizza & Saladeria and Steve of Inspiring Healthcare Resources and now with me of and my passion for helping the homeless with Klamath County Record Weekly Street Paper coming soon in
