KLAMATH FALLS, OR— Today's News, Thursday's Edition On Line.
As once a homeless person myself I know what it is like to be out on the streets. And no matter what city you live in, the missions there are always run the same way. The rules are as follows:
1. You have to attend service before you eat (Unless it is a holiday of some sort).
2. Refer to rule number 1, except replace eat, with mat.
The homeless are already down and out and do not want to hear about a God that they feel has abandoned them. They ask themselves if God is so great what have I done to deserve this? And if God is so great why hasn't He helped me yet. And why do I have to listen to this crap when I don't believe it or why it this crap being forced on me just so I can eat and get a mat to sleep on and a warm place with a roof over my hear. Where I have to worry about all that I have left in the world stolen by me too. It's not worth it. I will just sleep on the street where I don't have to deal with that crap and feel safer on the street.
There are even times in encampments that not everyone gets along, so they have to kind of police themselves and set their own rules. But just like the rest of society sometimes those rules are disrespected and ignored in a world where anything goes, within limits. And there are others who just keep to themselves and their distance from the wacko's that are mentally ill and off their medication. The same way the rest of society deals with it. But are not forced to live among them in the missions.
When looking at homeless people they are no different than the rest of us in society. The only differences are they are down and out and as far as person can go in life. I remember once from person experience when I was homeless on an island of paradise. Where I ended up homeless after quitting my job because I could not get a bed to sleep on. And there was a young man in the shelter with me. And he said, "James, It "Up from here". And it was.
Then there are those so called con homeless that will stand on a corner holding a gas can with a hand out waiting for the cash to roll in. It is OK the first day as it may the real situation but after 3 or 4 days it is just a con to fool people. That person hoping no one will notice and they can keep getting away with it. And that is what gives the real down and out and struggling homeless a bad rap or name.
There is never an easy answer to homelessness but I strong believe people running programs for the homeless should have at least once or twice been homeless in their lives to truly know what it is like to be homeless IMO.
Peace!
