Klamath Falls— It is a question that has been around as long as cars have been running over people crossing the street, or knocking down someone who is walking across their driveway. Oregon pedestrian right-of-way laws are not actually that complex. And the first rule is that, under Oregon law, every intersection constitutes a pedestrian crosswalk, whether or not it is marked or controlled by a traffic device. Pedestrians are not by any means totally absolved of responsibility for road safety.
Oregon has a long list of statutes regarding pedestrian right of way and drivers’ duties of care when out on the roads.
It seems however, there are drivers turning left onto S 6th from Austin Street that are not paying attention as pedestrians are crossing or the other drivers who stop in the crosswalk, instead behind the crosswalk. The drivers turning left at this intersection are only watching for their green light and for some reason do not see the pedestrians who have push the signal button. And when Intersection. And that is the pedestrians begin to cross.
All of sudden they notice the pedestrian attempting to cross the street in in front of the driver. Where the driver gives the pedestrian a strange look as the pedestrian is the one in the wrong and the diver either honks their horn and yells at the pedestrian as if the pedestrian is the one that was in the wrong. When in fact it is the driver to busy on their cell phone or having conversations with their passengers or off in space and thinking about themselves and not those tying to cross the street after pushing the crossing light button that gives them the right to do so.
It happens in both directions. Where drivers do not see the pedestrians coming from the corner of S 6th and Austin Street and they dart out there trying to beat the pedestrians and stop when they have no other choice knowing it is the pedestrian with the right away. This needs to stop before a pedestrian gets hurt or killed at that intersection. And that is not the only intersection on S 6th with same problem. Avalon and 6th and Altamont
Drive have similar problems where there should be a green arrow for those turning left, instead of the green light. It’s time Klamath Falls PD sits there on those corners and begin handing out traffic citations and maybe that will help. And for the city engineering department to re-evaluate those intersections or what ever department is responsible for those intersections. There are cameras on S. 6th and Austin that maybe could start locating the violators and issuing them warning tickets.
