Trump says Governor Newsom caused “A Lot of Death” During Protests
Donald Trump has once again spread misinformation from the Oval Office.
On Tuesday, June 10, the president was speaking to reporters inside of the White House about the ongoing anti-ICE protests happening in Los Angeles, as he fired shots at California Governor Gavin Newsom for the way he's been handling the situation in his state.
Protests broke out across the city amid ICE raids targeting Latino communities and workplaces — a result of Trump cracking down on illegal immigration in the months since he returned to office.
During Tuesday's press briefing, Trump was asked when the last time he spoke to Newsom was.
"A day ago. I called him up to tell him ‘you gotta do a better job,'" the Republican leader declared.
Trump went on to claim the governor was "causing a lot of death and a lot of potential death," however, there have been no reports at this time of anyone dying as a result of the protests in L.A.
"If we didn’t send out the national guard, Los Angeles would be burning right now," Trump continued. "Los Angeles would be not a lot different than what you saw take place in California and Los Angeles just a littlewhile ago," the president added in reference to the devastating wildfires that ravaged through Southern California in January.
Donald Trump’s June 14 Washington military parade may be relegated to news coverage on the streaming arms of the major TV networks.
The parade marks the founding of the U.S. Army during the American Revolutionary War 250 years ago. Trump has promised an “amazing day” with “tanks...planes...all sorts of things” taking over the streets of Washington.
The parade, with an estimated cost of up to $45 million according to military officials, also coincides with Trump’s 79th birthday.
Despite the hard sell from the President, TV networks are scrambling to figure out how much of the event they will cover on traditional live TV and how much will go straight to their streaming arms.
Trump Military Parade May Not Get Much Coverage on CBS, NBC, ABC
Does a parade meant to celebrate the nation truly exist if it can't get on national broadcast TV?
Mainstream TV-news outlets seem divided over how to cover an extravagant display of military might along the streets of Washington, D.C. from the Trump administration. A June 14 parade and accompanying festivities meant to call attention to the 250th birthday of the U.S. Army will be something to see, with three kinds of helicopters; Bradley vehicles; a fireworks display; and a parachute jump by the Golden Knights demonstration team.
Some will give the event a mere nod, while others will utilize all the resources a national TV newsroom can muster.
ABC News, NBC News and CBS News are unlikely to pre-empt regular TV programming for coverage of the event, according to people familiar with their plans. ABC News plans to "cover the parade across programs and platforms, including 24/7 streaming news channel ABC News Live's coverage beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 14." At NBC News, anchors Aaron Gilchrist and Kelly O'Donnell will lead special coverage of the event on NBC News Now, the news division's streaming outlet.
The broadcasters' ambivalence around coverage shows what a strange spectacle the parade is shaping up to be.
On one hand, a display of national military capabilities on U.S. soil is unique, even propagandistic. It's the sort of thing one sees in authoritarian nations like North Korea. Even some Republicans appear to oppose the concept, likening it to the sort of maneuver one sees in dictatorships.
Trump accidentally disproves his own claim about call with Gavin Newsom
Donald Trump mistakenly proved that he had falsely claimed that he called California Gov. Gavin Newsom "a day ago" on June 9 by providing a log that showed the conversation took place on June 7.
While speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, Trump was asked when the last time he talked to Newsom about the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles.
"A day ago," Trump replied. "Called him up to tell him got to do a better job, he's doing a bad job. Causing a lot of death and potential death."
"There was no call. Not even a voicemail," Newsom later insisted. "Americans should be alarmed that a President deploying Marines onto our streets doesn't even know who he's talking to."
Trump responded by sending Fox News anchor John Roberts a screenshot of his call log, which showed the call occurred three days earlier.
Elon Musk's Grok AI explained the confusion.
"June 7th was not one day ago from June 10th, 2025," Grok said. "It was three days prior. The confusion may stem from conflicting claims about a call between President Trump and Governor Newsom, with a call log showing contact on June 7th, not June 9th as Trump suggested."
