Road Trip to Alturas, CA for the 14th Annual JUNE JAMBOREE June 30, 2018 to Redding, CA and the Sundial Bridge
Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the Sundial Bridge is an architectural marvel! The glass decked, cable-stayed cantilever suspension bridge reaches 217 feet into the sky, spans 710 feet across the Sacramento River, and forms a working sundial. As an environmentally-conscious structure, Sundial Bridge was intentionally constructed without river footings to leave the salmon-spawning habitat undisturbed. While world-renowned and environmentally sensitive, Sundial Bridge also inspires onlookers with it's "bird in flight" design, symbolizing overcoming adversity. Link: Sundial Bridge.
Klamath Falls, OR— Road trip to Alturas, CA on June 29, 2018.
I started my trip by getting picked up by Enterprise Rent-A-Car at my house at noon. They picked me up and took me to their offices where I filled out the paper work and I then picked up the car I had reserved for my road trip to Alturas, CA. First for my stay at the Niles Hotel in order to stay one night, then in the morning check out of the Niles Hotel and head to see the "Friends of the Library 14th Annual JUNE JAMBOREE June 30, 2018", at the Baker's 10 Acre Railway Gardens Event.
After spending most of the morning taking pictures and a video of the train ride and robbery at "Friends of the Library 14th Annual JUNE JAMBOREE June 30, 2018", at the Baker's 10 Acre Railway Gardens. I was given a chance and opportunity to take still pictures of the area before the crowds started showing up for the Friends of the Library 14th Annual JUNE JAMBOREE in Alturas, CA. I took tons of pictures as I always do for events like this because the pictures don't always turn out right. And the more pictures you take the better chance you have of getting some great pictures over the bad ones that might be taken.
I had a great morning and now it was time to head to Redding, CA, but I needed to get some pictures of the outside of the Niles Hotel that I had not had a chance to do the night before when I was in Room 8 of the Niles Hotel on the second floor on the south end of the Niles Hotel.
Along the way on my road trip I took other pictures between Alturas, CA and Redding, CA. I planned on meeting a good friend of mine Mike Sheehan who lives in Redding, CA and who works at the Sundial Bridge as a Armed Security Officer.
The plan was for Mike Sheehan in Redding, CA to meet up with me at my Motel Room at Motel 6 Redding Central in the afternoon. By the time I had arrived it had reached 103 degrees and was it hot. I used to live in Redding, CA, in fact I worked for several different companies in Redding, CA. Meyer's Motels, Ltd who at one time owned the Oxford Suites Redding where it was my first job in Redding, CA as a laundry driver out of the Capri Motel where the laundry was located for the other Five Motels Myers Motels, Ltd owned at the time. Where I wrote a laundry Manual pick up and delivery schedule for the motels spread through-out Redding, CA at the time I worked for Myers Motels, Ltd. I also worked as a desk clerk too for Meyer's Motel's Ltd at the Capri Motel and the New Orleans on Hill Top Drive.
In fact, they owned several motels in Northern CA to Southern Oregon. I worked for them for a few years since 1986, then in 1988 I decided to move back to the LA area after raising my guardian son, Eric Wells, who had turned 18 years old and was now out on his own.
Before I left I mentioned I was going to get a job at Universal Studios. I did but not in the movie studios part. I did get a job at Universal Studios on the lower lot in the Merchandise Warehouse and up in the Tour Park in a place a called Sound Tracks Recording Studio, right next door to screen test theater. And at that time is was Star Trek, the original cast of the TV Series and Star Trek Movies. More about Universal Studios from my book. "Up from here" Chapter 19: Universal Studios.
When I came back from Universal City North Hollywood and working at Universal Studios I got my job back at Myers Motels, Ltd. I also got a job at a local Radio Station as a on air radio DJ for K-PAK AM 1230 Country Redding in November of 1988. Which a few months later changed the format to Classic Rock. K-PAK AM 1230 became KLXR AM 1230 Classic Rock Redding in January 1989. During that time I was also in a local play being produced called One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I got the part of AIDE WILLIAMS - staff. I remember at the end of each performance NURSE RATCHED - staff and I were booed at the end during the curtain call. Which means only one thing we did our job and we did it well. It was a fun play to be involved in and I had a great time doing it with a great cast.
Next, I had a job at Skyway Recreation Products in 1990 where I worked as a plastic injection molder machine operator on machine number one. Bicycle wheels were made in about a minute and you had to be fast. You first would put a hub in and then when the first wheel was done you would grab it and at the same time put another hub in for another wheel to be made. While you had the new wheel in your hands and had closed the door for a new one to be made. You would mark it, then grab a pole and attach the wheel to the poll and lower it into the water tank to be cooled. You had to use gloves of course to help keep the bicycle wheels clean and from getting dirty as any dirt would or could cause the wheel to be rejected later and then have to be re-grounded to use the plastic at another time. Plus the fact the wheels were very hot after just being made.
Then after so many bicycle wheels were made you would then take three or four of them and pass them along to the grinder person at the other end of the water tank. The wheels I made at the time were cream colored and were made for flower carts. Skyway Recreation Products also at the time made black plastic wheel chair wheels. It took me 5 weeks to get my job down pat on 10 hour shifts, 4 days a week Monday-Thursday. During that time I became one of the fastest injection molder machine operators. Eventually, I was transferred to the shipping department where I had years of experience in shipping and receiving. Where the pace was a little slower, until I was laid off and business at the time had slowed down. The company gave me little tasks to complete, but it just wasn't enough to keep me on as an employee on their payroll.
Finally, Mike Sheehan caught up with me after he and his friend went and saw a movie. I wanted to wait until it had cooled down before I attempted to take pictures of the Sundial Bridge as it was still way too hot. I haven't been to Redding, CA in years. I have so-called family that live there but I would not exactly call them family. None of them helped me with my Mom in her last days. And I am the baby of the family of an older brother, an older sister and another older brother two years older than I am. When people ask if I have any bothers or sisters I tell them I was an only child. My friends are more my family than my family has ever been.
During the time I lived in Redding, CA, I attended and worked on my BA degree in Human Resource Management through at the time was called the DCCP and now they call it the Adult Studies - ASPIRE at Simpson University. I was the class of 1993 the first and second class to graduate from Simpson College when I went there. While attending Simpson University I was working part time at K-FXS (K-FOX) 102.7 FM Redding, CA as a on air radio DJ. I was also working part time at HOMEBASE, which is now closed too. HOMEBASE was similar to HOME DEPOT. HOME DEPOT ran HOMEBASE out of business. HOMEBASE was first called HOMECLUB, then they changed their name to HOMEBASE. I worked in the Lumber Department when I first started IN 1991. After I graduated I switched departments and was moved over to Decore and Paint, then later I became a cashier and worked up front.

They sold K-FXS (K-FOX) 102.7 FM Redding, CA and I then got a job another part time job at another local radio station, KARZ 106.1 FM Redding, CA. My last day on the air for KARZ 106.1 FM was a live remote from the Shasta District Fair in Anderson, CA. Then I graduated and that is when I went to work for HOMEBASE full time. I was terminated from HOMEBASE, the same way I was from KARZ 106.1 FM Redding, CA.
After being off work for quite some time and no luck finding another job I came across an ad for hiring an ESL Teacher in South Korea. They only required a four year degree and I had that now so I applied and was hired. They paid for my airfare to Seoul, South Korea. I had never been out of the USA, it was going to be my first time And you can read about the rest of it on the links posted below.

It was getting cooler now and Mike Sheehan had arrived and was with me now at Motel 6 Redding Central. The only complaint I had at Motel 6 Redding Central was having to pay $4.99 for a faster Internet service. Which in my opinion was no faster. I think it was a rip off but oh, well. It was not down loading my videos any faster, the ones I had taken in Alturas, CA of the train ride and robbery at "Friends of the Library 14th Annual JUNE JAMBOREE and Niles Hotel room.
I had met Mike Sheehan a few months after my Mom passed away in 2007. Mike Sheehan was involved with a Christian Church called, The Refiners Fire Church. Where Mike Sheehan let me and my dog Feisty stay in one of his one bedroom trailers he had in the backyard of his property. I was short on cash at the time and my income had not started back yet from Soc. Sec. for my disability. I offered to build the church's website for some spare cash for food for me and Feisty and gas for the van. They were planning an event at the Redding Civic Auditorium.
Which is another chapter in my book. "Up from here" Chapter 14: Refiners Fire Church
Mike Sheehan and I finally headed for the Sundial Bridge so I could take my pictures before it got too dark to do it. Mike Sheehan and I spent sometime walking around the Sundial Bridge on it and under it. I had plenty of pictures that I feel I could use for my story about the Sundial Bridge now. I figured I could do the video in the morning before I left Redding, CA, and checked out of my room at Motel 6 Redding Central and it got too hot again.
After I got all the pictures I wanted. Mike Sheehan and I parted ways on the evening of Saturday June 30, 2018, and we both hoped we could see each other again sometime in the future the next time I came to Redding, CA, again for a visit. And I am so glad I don't live there anymore as it is way too hot for me. I recall when it could hit 126 degrees or more. One summer it did from what I remember when I was working for Myers Motels, Ltd.
After I checked out of Motel 6 Redding Central on Sunday morning July 1, 2018. I drove to the Sundial Bridge in Redding, CA, and did a video of the Sundial Bridge Redding, CA before it started to get hot again, and it did, it was now climbing to be around 106 degrees. I took my video of the Sundial Bridge Redding, CA and left and headed towards home, Klamath Falls, OR in the direction of Yreka, CA, North on I-5. As my next stop was to check out the new Rain Rock Casino in Yreka, CA.
