The East Skinner Butte Historic Landmark Area includes 24 buildings of architectural and historic significance, dating from the 1850's to the 1920's. One of the features that distinguishes this area from the other older residential areas in Eugene is the variety of periods and architectural styles represented. This historical footprint includes the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House, Lamb Cottage, a basalt quarry, the big "E", markers for Skinner's West 2nd Avenue cabin and Lincoln Street cabin.
March Tours planned for East Skinner Butte Historic Landmark Neighborhood.
Shelton McMurphey Johnson House is a 7,000 square foot Victorian House that is owned by the City of Eugene and operated as a museum by Shelton McMurphey Johnson Associates, a 501c3 non-profit organization. The Museum was opened in 1994 with just one floor available for viewing by the public.
Now open 6 days a week and furnished on all three floors, the Museum is a beautiful example of what life might have looked like in the 1930’s for the Shelton McMurphey Family.
The history of the Shelton McMurphey Johnson House, or the “Castle on the Hill,” begins with Thomas Winthrop Shelton and his wife, Adah.
